Exploring the Essence of Self through Breath – Radiant Bliss Yoga

So Hum meditation is a simple yet profound technique rooted in the yogic tradition, often used to deepen awareness of the self and connect with the universal consciousness. The name “So Hum” translates to “I am That,” where “That” refers to all creation, the universe, or the ultimate reality. This meditation is a form of mantra meditation that involves silently repeating the mantra “So Hum” in sync with one’s breath, emphasizing the natural flow and rhythm of breathing to cultivate mindfulness and presence.

Understanding So Hum Meditation

The So Hum meditation is built around the Sanskrit mantra “So Hum,” which is naturally aligned with the breath. “So” means “I am” and is silently repeated on the inhalation, while “Hum” means “That” and is silently repeated on the exhalation. This mantra is not just a phrase but a reflection of the connection between the individual self and the universal self, promoting a deep state of connectedness and unity.

How to Practice So Hum Meditation

2. Observing the Breath: Begin by taking a few deep breaths to settle your mind and body. Notice the natural flow of your breath without trying to control it. This helps in grounding yourself and preparing for the meditation.

3. Integrating the Mantra: As you inhale, silently say “So” in your mind, and as you exhale, silently say “Hum.” Let the mantra flow effortlessly with your breath. The repetition of “So Hum” should be gentle and not forced, allowing it to become the focus of your awareness.

4. Deepening the Meditation: Continue to focus on the sound and rhythm of the mantra as it syncs with your breath. Each time your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the mantra “So Hum.” This practice helps in anchoring your mind in the present moment and deepening the meditation.

5. Duration: Practice So Hum meditation for about 10-20 minutes initially. You can gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.
